Dr P. R Ray Memorial Lions Eye Hospital was launched with the vision to take quality affordable eye care to all in this region where a decade ago people had to suffer unavailability of services and hence had to resort to Siliguri or Kolkata or other faraway places for even basic eye treatment. When we first shared our dream with the founding members of Lion Club Of Siliguri Greater somewhere it echoed with the Club Vision who have set the benchmark for all Lions in the country towards eye care in North Bengal. Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital laid its foundation when the club founders realized the growing avoidable blindness cases in the region which could have been easily avoided with timely interception and treatment. Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital since last 40 years have been trying to create accessible quality eye care spaces in the region of North Bengal taking quality, affordable eye care to every household.

According to Chief Guest DG Lion Abijeet Sen said, “Today, Lions District 322 F is one of the most active Lions Club International District in India and we made it so because of our strong patrons like Lions Club Of Siliguri Greater and Lions Club of Kaliaganj. Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital today is not only the biggest hospital in North Bengal but, the biggest eye care systems in entire India that have made our Lions District proud. I give example to other Lions Clubs in the Lions District 322F to visit the hospital and understand the professionalism with which they are serving people. I am sure that with the strong will of Lions Club of Kaliyaganj and exceptional professional capability of Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital we would set a new mark in the history of Lions International in India. This initiative would not only benefit the people of Uttar Dinajpur, but also the adjacent places Bihar and Jharkhand.”

B. D Jain Lions Eye Hospital was inaugurated recently on August 30th, 2021, 150 km East of Siliguri at Cooch Behar. The hospital was opened as a joint initiative of Lions Club Of Cooch Behar and Lions Club Of Siliguri Greater principally to expand hospital reach to the people of Cooch Behar and the adjacent bordering district of Alipurduar, and the State of Assam.

Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospitals and eye care systems has an infrastructural presence of 2 primary eye care centres inside Cooch Behar district including centres at Mathabhanga, , Cooch Behar City. The hospital also has a long history of conducting comprehensive and vision centre based eye care camps in the district. With the increasing people’s participation in accessing eye care services of the hospital, resulting in demand for services at local level creating an urgency to establish a system which could act as an immediate redressal mechanism for patients intercepted through direct engagement camps and primary eye care centres.

At present almost 18% share of patients are visiting yearly at the base hospital at Siliguri, are from Cooch Behar district. 5% of these patients are intercepted locally and reffered to the hospital at Siliguri resulting in also delay in treatment by atleast 2-3 days including labour for mitigating the physical distance and leaving a day job for assisting family or coming themselves for treatment. This time is more for patients who had to resort to the hospital without having intercepted or has to resort to treatment due to increasing condition of the eye.

Realizing the growing need the parent institution Lions Club Of Siliguri Greater partnered with its long-time partner Lions Club Of Coochbehar to create this safe space institutionalizing quality affordable eye care under a single trusted umbrella of Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital.

With support from Lions Club Of Cooch Behar and LCIF a 20 bedded Eye Super Specialty was established with ultramodern Diagnostic and treatment equipments, fully modular Operation theatre, and other amenities to suit to the comfort of patient and quality standards that could match with the tag of Siliguri Greater Lions.

With most of the Ophthalmic surgeries becoming a day procedure today, the hospital also provides a comfortable and modern Day Care, along with provision of Semi Private and General Ward. At present the hospital is in the process for empanelment with Swasthya Saathi and WBHS to become more accessible to the people of North Bengal.
